Courses I Teach:

Journalism 61A: Beginning News Writing for online and print publications . This class steeps you in the basics of writing news stories and delves into ethics and responsibilities.  When you are through, you should be able to bash out competent news stories quickly, accurately and under deadline.

Journalism 135: Spartan Daily and thespartandaily.com. This is an exciting staff class whose students publish the award-winning Spartan Daily newspaper and who now publish theWeb site. This is where all your classroom work gets focused into real world reporting, writing and editing. In the process, student reporters gain confidence and hone their reporting and writing skills.

Journalism 61C: Beginning Magazine Writing. Students learn to write profile, feature and issue stories in the magazine and newspaper feature styles. You learn to write accurately and well and you begin to build the fundamentals of good writing. It includes the ethics and responsibilities of all journalists.

Journalism 132: Internet Information Gathering. This class makes you familiar with the vast amount of information on the Web and how to find it. It increases your search abilities and your abilities to evaluate the quality and trustworthiness of various Web sites and Web information. The class introduces you to the facts and people behind the beats reporters cover, including city hall, public records, police, civil and criminal courts and the county Registrar of Voters.

Journalism 153: Advanced Magazine and Online Writing. This class delves further into the nuances of good writing with an eye to writing stories that meet journalistic publishing standards. The class is also designed to continue to improve and/or polish your writing and reporting.

Mass Communications 100W: Writing workshop. This university-required class improves your writing and helps broaden your writing skills and styles. You write a minimum of 8,000 words in this class.

Bachelor of Arts degree, Political Science/International, San Jose State University.
Professional Experience:
Veteran reporter. Twenty years in the field covering everything from crime and courts to international business to the fall of the Soviet Union.
