1.       Write an immediate identification lead of 35 words or less using the following facts:

 

Who:          Chevy Chase, actor and comedian

 

What:         appointed to board of trustees

 

When:        yesterday

 

Where:       Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.

 

Why:          He is a famous alumnus.

 

 

 

2.      Assume you are writing for a newspaper near the accident. Write a hard news lead for this afternoon's paper based on the following set of facts:

 

Who:          Amtrak train called the Colonial

 

What:         Collided with three Conrail locomotives on a switch that merges four tracks into two.

 

When:        1:30 p.m., yesterday

 

Where:       Near Chase, Md.

 

Why:          Larry Chase, Amtrak spokesman: The Conrail diesels, like Amtrak, were northbound. The Conrail had apparently run a stop sign.

 

Other:        At least 15 people dead, 175 injured. Worst accident in Amtrak's history.
