Please check the class schedule
for due dates for each assignment.
Speech
& PowerPoint Presentation (100 points)Prepare a 4-5 minute speech and PowerPoint presentation on a topic of your choice (pending instructor approval) to present to the class. Your written speech should be about 500-650 words.
Your three deliverables for this project, due on the day of your presentation, are:
Newsletter/E-zine/Focused
Blog Project (100 points)For this project, you have a few choices: 1) you can join the team that writes short news stories for The JMC blog and produces the spring issue of the JMC alumni e-zine; 2) you can form a team (2-4 people) to write and produce an independent newsletter, e-zine or blog for the non-profit organization or start-up company of your choice (subject to instructor approval); or 3) you can start an independent focused blog (solo or small group). By "focused blog," I mean a blog that focuses on a specific topic, issue or market niche.
Each student is expected to write 500-1,000 words for this assignment, including any related photo captions, etc. You will also have the opportunity to bring in drafts of your articles/posts for in-class peer editing prior to final submission. See the class schedule for deadlines.
Direct
Mail Project (100 points)The InDesign brochure you create in class will also be part of your Garden Tour direct mail package. For your direct mail package, you can elect to sell tickets to the annual garden tour or solicit potential members to join Gamble Garden, using the annual garden tour as a selling point. Here's a link to information on the Gamble Garden spring tour.
Required elements of your direct mail package include:
1. A direct mail letter on Gamble Garden letterhead (1.5
- 2 pages long, see DM handouts for specs)
2. Garden tour brochure (produced in class and revised as needed
for this assignment)
3. Reply card or form (for ordering tickets or signing up a
new member)
4. Mailing envelope (#10) -- the one your direct mail package
will be sent out in
5. Return envelope (#9) -- the one your reply card will come
back in
6. Short lift letter or “tickler” (optional,
but a good idea -- for extra credit)
Position
Paper (75 points)For this assignment, you will research and write about a specific issue from the perspective of a specific organization (corporation, trade association or non-profit organization) or elected official. You will begin this assignment by writing a memo to the instructor briefly describing your issue and your organization. Once your proposal has received instructor approval, you will research your issue and organization and write a position paper (500-750 words, 2.5-3 pages).
Your completed position paper should provide an in-depth review
and analysis of an issue while conveying the viewpoint of the
organization you've selected. Please use in-text citations and
a bibliography to credit your sources of data/information and
to lend credibility to your organization's position.
