Course Objectives Journalists need access to current and historical facts, statistics and records. We will develop the ability to identify and use sources of information as well as to quickly gather information using a logical research plan and a disciplined approach. Goals
Students will develop skills in the use of local and remote computerized databases, the Internet and the World Wide Web. Students will develop techniques for interviewing, questioning at news conferences and for completing story writing assignments. Students will develop verbal and writing skills that result in concise, accurate and creative written assignments devoid of jargon.
Students will learn how to think critically, creatively and independently.
Students will understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information.
Students will critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness.
What Is Expected/Required Of Students
This is an advanced-level course. Participation in class discussions and projects is essential. Students are encouraged to share their points of view, facts or analysis. Guest speakers will visit the class during the semester. Many are working journalists.
Unexcused Absences
To receive an excused absence from a quiz, test or assignment, students must contact the instructor beforehand, explain the circumstances and request an excused absence. Depending on the explanation, the instructor reserves the right to deny or approve the request.
Come to class on time because late arrivals distract everyone.
Absolute Deadlines Assignments must be turned in at the start of class they are due or when the instructor calls for them. Assignments may not be typed during class. After they have been collected by the instructor, any assignments submitted thereafter are past deadline and may receive an "F" grade. No make-up opportunity should be expected.
Course Grading Procedures
Grades will be determined as follows: Quizzes and Assignments 40%
These in-class assignments and quizzes can consist of many things: spot quizzes,
points for special activities and a host of other possibilities. Attend class and
pay attention so you can take advantage of these.
Written Assignments 50%
There will be a handful of assigned papers during the course of the semester. These will usually involve a live interview and online research.
Class Attendance/Participation 10%
