Final Projects  

Thesis, Professional Project & Comprehensive Papers:

Plan A: Thesis

This option requires the successful completion of a thesis and an oral presentation of the thesis to a faculty/student audience. The thesis proposal must be approved by the Graduate Committee, and the student will work with three advisers.

Required courses: MCom 210, 220, 230; six units of 299; and three courses chosen from MCom 240, 250, 270, 280, 296E or other graduate electives 21 units
Elective courses at 100- or 200-level in the School or other departments. These must be related to the candidate's professional or academic objectives, and must be chosen with the approval of the Graduate
Coordinator
9 units
Total 30 units

 

Plan B: Professional Project

This option requires a professional project and an oral presentation to a faculty/student audience. The professional-quality project may take a variety of forms: a series of newspaper or magazine articles, a radio or television documentary, a photojournalism essay, an advertising or public relations campaign, design of a Web page or other professional work. A project proposal must be approved by the Graduate Committee, and the student will work with at least two advisers.

The work completed on the project must be greater than the work for two graduate seminars. The project must include a final report and must be presented in a binder suitable for library storage; also included in the binder must be the professional product, such as an edited videotape, a public relations or advertising plan, published news articles, or copies of Web pages.

Plan C: Comprehensive Papers

Comprehensive papers option is a newly adopted plan by the school. This option requires taking an additional graduate elective in the school and completing 3 units of MCom 298 by researching and writing 30-40 page comprehensive exam papers - (a) in media communication and (b) in the candidate's area of speciality. This is other than the required courses and electives as mentioned in thesis or project plan.
