Elias Abundis Castillo (1997) founded The Mexico Group, a consulting firm for U.S. firms in Mexico. The Group publishes the Mexico Bulletin, a monthly newsletter that provides critical analysis of events in Mexico as well as news on what major firms are doing in the country. As company president, he recently addressed the Commonwealth Club of California on "Mexico, a New Revolution, Will It Succeed?" Brian Edward Adams (1994) is director of community and public relations and entertainment editor at KICU-TV in San Jose. Nominated for an Emmy Award in 1997, Adams is also an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Communication at Santa Clara University. badams@kicu.com

Joe Aquilina (1985) recently celebrated 20 years as a television news photographer for KRON-TV in San Francisco. He works out of the San Jose News Bureau. jaquilina@aol.com

Ted M. Coopman (1995) founded Rogue Communications Consultants in 1996. Coopman developed and organized the "Rogue Scholar Project," an effort to make scholarly writing more understandable and accessible. He has presented papers at National Communications Association conventions. rogue@cruzio.com

Richard S. Cox (1976) is a speaker for Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, a columnist for the San Jose Post-Record and a free-lance magazine writer. When he's not working, he enjoys RV travel, camping and photography.

Marcia Daszko (1987) founded Marcia Daszko & Associates in 1992. Her Milpitas-based management consulting firm focuses on teaching new management and leadership methods, particularly those of Dr. W. Edwards

Deming. Daszko works with senior leaders, CEOs and administrators in business, education and government across the United States. In 1990, she founded the Bay Area Deming User Group, which has more than 500 members. mdaszko@aol.com

Kathy Davis McFarland (1986) is a software usability specialist and consultant for Microsoft and other corporations. Self-employed, she designs, executes and analyzes studies of software usability. v-kathym@microsoft.com

Rhysa Davis (1970) is executive director of the YWCA in Palmdale, Calif. Davis attended Cambridge University on a USC scholarship since graduation from SJSU.

Jane DeVoe (1984) is a purchasing coordinator with Sutter Home Winery, Inc. in St. Helena, Ca. In 1996 and 1997, she was selected to paint wine auction panels for the Napa Valley Wine Auction. DeVoe has traveled to Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and Greece.

Nandan Dixit (1991) is a technical writer for Sun Microsystems. Dixit handles writing, researching and editing and is also busy caring for two school-age children. nandixit@aol.com

Kandy Arnold (1991) is Assistant Professor of Media Arts at Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. She formerly was a lecturer in SJSU's School of Journalism and Mass Communications. She also taught photojournalism and photography at Chabot College in Hayward. Gregory L. Balkovek (1973) has been vice president of SFI Insurance Services in Redding, Calif. His responsibilities include insurance sales and marketing. A Scoutmaster, Balkovek was honored with the Scoutmaster Award of Merit in 1997 and the Scout Leader's Training Award in 1995. He is active with the Golden Empire Council, the Shasta Trinity District Committee, the Rotary Club and the Redding Chamber of Commerce.

Ron Burda (1973) has been a senior staff photographer with the San Jose Mercury News, which hired him while he was earning his M.S. degree. Burda, who works out of the newspaper's Alameda County Bureau in Fremont, was the first M.S. student to graduate from the program with a concentration in photojournalism. Kristin Butler (1995) has been a reporter for the past three years for The Argus (Alameda Newspaper Group) in Fremont. She covers the environment.

Robert Carpio (1997) has been a communications associate for Read-Rite Corporation in Milpitas, where he edits a bi-weekly newsletter, Recorder, and helps with special events planning and execution. robert.carpio@readrite.com

John C. Cheney (1979) is a project manager for IBM living in Grapevine, Texas.

Jeff Christensen (1993) is an associate marketing communications manager at LifeScan, Inc., in Milpitas. He and his wife, Erika, have traveled to Spain and France.

 

Ted Fink (1994) works part time at the Argus Observer in Ontario, Ore., and is a part-time photography and desktop publishing instructor at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario. He and his wife live in New Plymouth, Idaho, where they have a goat dairy with more than 80 goats. The M.S. degree allowed him to live the lifestyle he wanted.

Nancy Fong (1995) is the health care reporter for the Daily Review in Hayward. She also writes the paper's "Senior Journal" column. Fong is getting married in July.

Leslie (Glatstein) Franz (1994), is doing marketing communications work for Tektronix Inc. in Beaverton, Ore. She was married in April 1997, and traveled to Italy and Switzerland for her honeymoon. leslie.franz@tek.com

Grace Fagen Belangia (1993) handles marketing plans, writing, media relations and special events on a free-lance basis. She and her husband had a baby girl, Chloe Elise, last May, and live in Augusta, Ga. belangia@groupz.net

Leslie Farmer (1997) is a free-lance journalist who has written several magazine articles drawn from her master's project, which focused on the restoration of historic buildings in Prague. One piece was sold to Nase Rodina, and she is revising an article for The World and I. Farmer visited Tokyo and Kyoto in October 1997.
