Admission Requirements

 

Two Applications have to be filed to fulfill the application requirements:

A. Application for the Graduate Department of Mass Communications

B. Application for Graduate students 
or
CSU Application for International Students

    Write Statement of Purpose

Submit a 250-500 word Statement of Purpose. Indicate in this essay your reasons for pursuing graduate study in mass communications. The statement should also include: (1) area of subject interest; (2) career goals; and (3) any additional background information concerning your academic and /or professional work experience. This essay should be typed and double spaced. Applicants with media-related work experience may attach a vita or resume.

    References.

Obtain three recommendation letters, preferably from current or former university professors who can evaluate your ability and capacity for graduate work. Letters from current or former employers may also be submitted if applicants has been out of school for at least five years and feel their professional references can comment on skills that would be useful in graduate study.

     Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Scores.

The GRE is required of all applicants. Applicants should earn a minimum score of 1000, with at least 550-score on the verbal section. Scores should be sent directly to the School, which uses results as an evaluation criteria along with the undergraduate GPA. GRE scores may be submitted after the application deadline; however, the School will NOT act on an application until scores are received.

    Transcripts (Optional)

It would be very helpful if you would mail unofficial photocopies of your transcripts to the School

Detach the School application and mail with the Statement of Purpose, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and, if available, copies of your transcript, to:

NOTE: Deadlines set by the School of Journalism and Mass Communications for the M.S. Program are Nov. 1 for the Spring Semester and April 1 for the Fall Semester. International students have a March 1 deadline for Fall and an October 1 deadline for Spring.

Instructions for filing the School application (See B above):

1.  Obtain a Graduate Study Application Packet through mail from this address:

or Submit an online application form
or Contact Admissions & Records Office by giving the following information: Name, Address, Term (e.g "Fall, 2003"), Class Level & Domestic or International Applicant

California residents may get a packet from a local community college, or at their nearest CSU campus.

2.  All applicants must complete Part A and Part B of the University Admissions Application.

  • Applicants must specify either the Fall or Spring semester.
    Specify Degree.
    On Part A (Item 10a) and Part B (Item 11a), specify "Mass Communications" and the code number, 06011,
    Signature.
    Remember to sign and date your application forms.

3. Pay Fee

  • Attach to your application a personal check or money order, made payable to California State University, for the application fee specified (U.S. funds). Print your Social Security Number on the face of the check.

4. Transcripts.

  • Request official copies of your transcripts from the institutions that you listed in Part A of your application. You may have them sent directly to the Admissions & Records Office at SJSU, OR you may enclose them in your University application for priority processing. Make sure that transcripts are sent in sealed envelopes from the
    institutions you attended. Photocopies are NOT accepted. The Admissions Office does not forward applications to the School until official transcripts are received and evaluated.

5. TOEFL Scores.

  • International students should send an official student copy of their TOEFL scores (minimum score of 600
    desired) with their application, or indicate when the exam will be taken. The Admissions Office will not act on applications without TOEFL scores.

6. Mail Application.
    Mail Part A and Part B of the application, with the application fee, to:

**Please be aware that many graduate programs have application deadlines that differ from those shown here. Many of these same programs have established early documentation deadlines as well. We recommend you contact Graduate Studies for current deadline information, or check the Graduate Studies Web site for Fall and Spring admission information.
