In order to increase your knowledge of the inner workings of the editorial/visual aspects of publications, all staff members of the Spring 2004 issue of Access have an exceptional opportunity to spend two hours in September to follow and work with editors of magazines in the Bay Area.
The instructor has been talking to editors and art directors compiling a list of those who are willing to take two or three students at a time, and spend two hours with them. The magazines are located around the Bay Area, are published at various times, and have varying circulation sizes and audiences.
Advertising Sales Assignment Possible Commissions = From 10 to 15 percent

In order for any professional print or online publication to first survive and then thrive, it must sell advertising space. Editors, art directors, photography directors all must not only be aware of the value of advertising sales, but must understand how to convince an advertiser to select their publication over all other media outlets as the vehicle that will best reach the advertiser’s target audience.
This semester, the Spartan Daily advertising staff will be the primary sellers of space in Access. As part of your requirements to complete this course, all members of the Access staff for the Fall 2004 issue, will make an honest attempt to sell advertising space, and that effort will be rewarded with up to a 15 percent commission for their efforts (see Advertising Sales Materials CR 35-47).
Once the freelancers submit their first draft, it becomes difficult to devote time for advertising sales for some of the staff, so a concerted effort should be made by everyone through mid-March. After that date, the staff has until April 29th to sell space and get their insertion orders in.
Your instructor will teach you the basics of advertising sales, make known a list of possible advertisers, and with the student advertising director, will provide you with a workable advertising sales kit.
On May 4th turn in copies of all of your contact sheets, a separate list of all contacts and the results of each of them.
