My mug

These are a few of the online projects I've created or worked on, both for pedagogical and research purposes. A few of them date back to my previous job at Butler University.

The SPART
I designed and developed this student Web portal for the students of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications during the Fall 2001 semester. I tried to incorporate both ideas from other such sites and a few concepts of my own. The most unusual aspects are probably the site links, which are arranged in a semicircle clong the plates of the Spartan helmet, and the color-scheme changer. While I did the design work, students maintained and updated the site.

School of Journalism and Mass Communication Web Site
I junked the School's old site and developed this one from scratch during the Fall 2000 semester. It's been very popular thus far.

Exams:
NOTE: All exams require a Javascript-enabled browser and a username and password for access. If you are a faculty member interested in viewing exams, click here to e-mail me and I'll send you the login information.

JR134 Final Writing Exam
This exam was originally scheduled for the very last day of finals, but since I was administering it online anyway, I set it up so the students could take it any time they wanted. The exam code stamps the starting and ending times into the submitted exam, and shows a time clock at the bottom of the screen. Students write a story and a sidebar based on their own selections of material on the given subject.

JR134 Online Writing Exam -- Features
This advanced writing exam uses an interactive environment to simulate the process of choosing interviewees and putting together a story on deadline from several sources, including specified Internet sites. Students must choose four of seven possible interviewees, and the program presents them with the information from only those four sources.

JR134 Online Writing Exam -- Disasters
This exam uses technology to create a lifelike reporting scenario. In the second half of the exam, students are given details of a disaster to cover, but because of time constraints, they must choose two out of five available sources to interview. They choose two and the program presents them with the information from only those two sources.

JR212 Online Writing Exam -- Rewrite/Follow-up Story (Butler University)
This exam lets students rewrite a very poorly written story online, then presents them with the last of four scenarios for a series of follow-up stories.

JR212 Online Writing Exam -- Obit/Crime Story (Butler University)
This introductory exam allows students a bit of choice in the obits they write.

JR107 Online Midterm Exam (Butler University)
The Intro to Mass Communication classes at Butler in Spring 1999 became the first in our department to take an exam online. This exam includes areas where students select answers to multiple-choice questions, fill in blanks in identification questions, and type in short answers. I designed the form and wrote the code myself. The exam was very popular with students, who could type in their answers to essay questions.

Special News Story Pages
When big news stories happen, I like to use the Web to show my classes how they develop over time. Here are a couple of examples of how I've done that:
Payne Stewart Learjet Crash
Columbine High School Shootings

Online research project demo
This is the interface for a research project on the use of online newspapers and print newspapers. I'm still working on the results.
